As we all start to venture out into the world again after being stuck at home for almost a full 12 months, the North Yorkshire Moors is a great first stop on your holiday in Yorkshire! With miles of countryside to explore, there is something for everyone to enjoy, all just a short distance from a number of our holiday parks in Yorkshire.
As one of the largest expanses of upland heather moorland in England and Wales, the moorland is rather impressive. Most of the highest ground is covered in heather - and n early summer you’ll hear the call of the birds such as the red grouse, curlew and more! As the summer evenings begin to draw in, the flowering heather turns the moorland into a breath-taking carpet of purple!
Head to the Eastern side of the North Yorkshire Moors to find where the land meets the sea. Explore towering cliffs and rocky shores, sheltered bays and wooded valleys. This coastline offers a range of dramatic views. Elsewhere you will find wildflowers, nesting seabirds and so much more. Dotted along the shore you will find quaint villages, made up of winding streets and pastel homes.
The large expanse of open sky is remarkable during the day, but even more so once the sun has gone down. In 2020 the North Yorkshire Moor was a designated an International Dark Sky Reserve by the International Dark-Sky Association – one of only 18 in the world! It is officially one of the best places in the country to see the stars because of the low light pollution and clear horizons.
The streams and peaceful rivers are a beautiful, and an important part of the character of the moors. Providing an integral habitat for nationally important species, a water supply for people and a scenic relaxing part of the landscape. The waterways in the North Yorkshire Moors have a range of characters including babbling brooks, wooded gorges and slow waters.
The North Yorkshire Moors is one of the most wooded of England’s National Parks. The woodland covers 23% of the National Park, covering many of the valley sides. Some of the woodland trees in the National Park are very old. Ancient woodlands that have existed for over 400 years make up 5% of the North York Moors - many plants and animals that live here are found nowhere else, making the woodland area irreplaceable!
