Scarborough – the Queen of the Yorkshire coast, lies just 45 minutes from historic York situated between Whitby to the North and Bridlington to the South. The main focus to holiday makers is the golden stretch of beach which visitors flock to during the summer months. Picturesque Scarborough Castle dominates the coastal skyline and makes for an interesting day out. The area though supports many attractions beside the seaside, some of which we have highlighted below.
More on ScarboroughWhitby
Explore the narrow streets and alleyways that wind through this picturesque coastal town towards the busy quayside. The picture postcard harbour is overlooked by the ruins of the ancient St Hilda’s Abbey high on Whitby’s East Cliff. Why not trek the 199 steps from the old town of Whitby that lead up to Parish Church of St Mary, the scene of which was inspiration for Bram Stoker’s famous book, Dracula.
Filey
Just a short distance from Scarborough is the traditional English seaside resort of Filey. A holiday hotspot since the Victorian era, Filey offers golden sands and a fishing harbour village with quaint shops and cafes. Take in the beautiful views of Filey Bay or enjoy a coastal walk along the cliff top to Bempton Cliffs or Flamborough Head.
Bridlington
If your looking for fun seaside activities for the kids then look no further than a day out to Bridlington. The beachside promenade is packed with kids rides and amusements or you can show off your sand castle making skills on either of Bridlington’s two award winning beaches. The harbour town bustles in the summer months.
Robin Hood’s Bay
Venture the path’s of pirates and smugglers! Robin Hood’s Bay is a maze of tiny streets and passageways surrounding an ancient fishing harbour. Legend has it that Robin Hood raided French Pirates pillaging the North Yorkshire coast and returned the loot back to the local villagers and so the name was born. Robin Hood’s Bay is a picturesque town with unique quirky appeal and well worth a visit.
Goathland Village
For fans of the TV series Heartbeat, Goathland is an essential visit. Here you can view the now infamous shops and green, the tea rooms and Scripps Funeral Service and Petrol Station all of which were familiar sights on the series.
