Yorkshire’s most scenic railway journeys

Shh! Whisper it quietly…. Trainspotting is now cool. Yes, it’s true! The popular pastime was even given its own dedicated show on BBC 4 (Trainspotting Live) recently. And now Radio Times magazine has put together its list of the most scenic spots for trainspotting in the country – and some are right on the doorstep of our Yorkshire holiday parks.

Highlighted in their top 8 scenic trainspotting locations are Whitby and the North Yorks Moors National Park, both of which are close to our Rosedale, Burnside and The Haven holiday parks in Yorkshire…

WhitbyAll aboard! Next stop Whitby…

Whitby is an extremely popular seaside town, and it’s easy to see why! With its picturesque harbour, galleries, shops and, of course, the famous 199 steps, there’s plenty to see and do in Whitby.

But it also boasts a picturesque railway line, The Esk Valley Railway, which runs from the town up to Middlesbrough. Covering 35 miles, this 90-minute journey sees the train stop at 16 stations along the route and it’s an ideal way to take in the fantastic scenery of the North Yorks Moors National Park.

Perfect for cyclists and walkers, The Esk Valley Railway links to many of the cycling and walking routes in the area including The Cleveland Way and the Whitby to Danby Cycling Route. Whitby is only a short journey from our Yorkshire holiday parks and is well worth a day trip!

Climb on-board a steam train or heritage diesel loco and enjoy the scenery on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Relax in cosy, traditional compartments and wood-panelled carriages as your journey through the moorland landscape.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway takes you on a journey through five stations covering 18 miles from Grosmont in the north to Pickering further south. It is the country’s most popular heritage railway, taking in Goathland, Newton Dale Halt along the route Levisham.

You may recognise Goathland Station from the Harry Potter films, where it was cast as Hogsmeade Station. Goathland village itself may also be familiar, better known as Aidensfiled in the long-running ITV drama Heartbeat.

All just a stone’s throw from our Yorkshire holiday parks

Both the Esk Valley Line and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway heritage line are only a short distance from our Yorkshire holiday parks.

Rosedale is situated in the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park and only seven miles from Pickering. It is available for holiday cottages, glamping holidays, touring and camping and Holiday Homes for Sale.

Burnside is exclusive for holiday home owners, providing guests with a peaceful retreat north of Scarborough.

The Haven is a small and exclusive owners-only park and is situated near Scarborough in North Yorkshire. It is great base from which to explore the north of the county, including Whitby.
